Electrical Wire gauges in India

Electrical wire gauge indicates the number of wire strands and the thickness of each wire strand in mm. The wires are generally sold on a square mm basis in India. but the same square mm wires are available with different wire gauges.

When you are purchasing the power cables, Locate the size published on the cable boxes. It will look like 14/0.03 mm or 1.5 Sq mm. This indicates the wire contains 14 nos of wire strands of 0.03 mm thickness each. Higher the number of strands, better the capacity to pass on the current.
