Types of Sand Used for Construction

Nov 29, 2018 / By System Admin / in Fine Aggregates

Sand is loose particles of hard broken rock, it comprises grains from the disintegrated rock. The diameter of grains ranges between 0.06 and 4.75 mm in size and varies in shades of brown and orange in color. Sand provides bulk, strength, and other properties to construction materials like asphalt and concrete. It is also used as a decorative material in landscaping. Specific types of sand are used in the manufacture of glass and as a molding material for metal casting. Other sand is used as an abrasive in sandblasting and to make sandpaper. Sand is a significantly important material for construction but this important material must be purchased with all care and vigilance.

River Sand

This is generally gathered from the banks of the river. It has fine quality, unlike pit sand. This sand is usually whitish-grey in color and has rounded particles. This sand is very much useful for construction purposes such as plastering and so on.

Msand Crushed Stone Sand / Artificial Sand / M Sand

It is a substitute for River Sand, it is also known as fine aggregates which are manufactured by crushing either granite or basalt rock using 3 stage crushing process by some companies. This sand is manufactured in conformance to IS Codes and is an effective alternative to river sand also known popularly as M Sand.

Slag Sand

Granulated Blast furnace slag or GBFS is a sand-like substance produced by spraying high-pressure water jets on a blast furnace Molten Slag. When this slag is grounded, it becomes Ground Granulated Blast furnace slag or GGBFS, which is a hot product for ready mix concrete units to produce concrete

Pit Sand (Coarse sand)

Pit sand is classified under coarse sand which is also called Badarpur in common language. This type of coarse sand is procured from deep pits of abundant supply and it is generally in red-orange color. The coarse grain is sharp, angular, and certainly free from salts, etc which is mostly employed in concreting.

Crusher Dust (CRF)

Crusher dust is a waste produced from m-sand manufacturing. They are less than 150 microns and fine powder material. They are commonly used for paver filling. They are not recommended for concreting purposes.

Beach Sand

Sand from the beach beds is used for filling play courts, patios., etc. It should be used merely for filling purposes only. and should be avoided for concreting purposes.
