Vastu is a practice of following certain rules to enhance positive energies and to eliminate negative energies around us. Vastu Shastra suggests some guidelines while constructing a new house. Following those guidelines, you can even change an inauspicious plot into an auspicious one. After having a rough plan of the house, you can proceed considering the Vastu guidelines for your new house.

Many people dismiss Vastu as a waste of time and as a superstition. In reality, Vastu is an architectural science that deals with building houses in accordance with purpose, rules and best practices. While some of its recommendations may seem archaic and downright silly, Vastu has a logical reason behind each of its principles.

Hence Vastu is not a superstition and pseudoscience. It is rather a clever set of principles put together by our ancestors to bring betterment into our lives.

Elements of vastu

Vastu Shastra is an ancient science which helps one to get the natural benefits freely offered by the five basic elements of the universe in which we all live. These basic elements are

  • Akash (SKY)
  • Prithvi (EARTH)
  • Paani (WATER)
  • Agni (FIRE)
  • Vayu (WIND).
  • Vastu can be applied by keeping in harmony with these basic five elements of nature.

The Directions of Vastu

The proper orientation means the proper knowledge of all the eight directions. It is a common knowledge that the direction from where the Sun arises is known as East and where it sets as West and when one faces the East direction, towards one's left is North and towards one's right is South. The corner where two directions meet obviously is more significant since it combines the forces which originate from both the directions. So totally, there are eight directions - North, Northeast, East, Southeast, South, Southwest, West, Northwest. Every direction has its own significance and has its own construction. The basic rules of Vastu are based on these eight directions

Vastu tips that are to be maintained while building a house

1. Pre-construction

It is recommended that one performs a Bhumi Pooja (worshiping the earth) before starting the house construction. This is considered an auspicious beginning and heralds a good start to the proceedings. Before starting the construction, the land should be cleared of thorny plants, bushes, and stones. The holes in the ground must be covered with some filler.

2. Construction Material

Only new bricks, wood, and materials should be used when building a new house. Man-made materials like plastic and asbestos are not acceptable building materials. The reason being that inorganic materials are not considered adequate conductors of cosmic energies.

Materials from an old building should not be used to build a new one. Otherwise, those old materials may repeat negative incidents that occurred in the old house. Use of old things in new construction may result in loss of wealth.

  • Good quality of soil & cement should be used. To live in a healthy home, you need to build your house with the natural and non-toxic material.
  • Wood from thorny trees should not be used, as it will have a negative effect. Materials that have been stored for a long time should also not be used.
  • Iron grills should only be used when needed.
  • Wood is more magnetically vibrant with the earth energy and makes for a more energetically vibrant building.
3. House entrance

Entrance door located in the North, East or North East of the house is considered the most auspicious direction. The entrance door size should always be larger than the other doors of the house. This is because the sun rises in the east and is said to bring in positive energy and light into the household. The other acceptable direction that the house entrance can face is towards the North East.

4. Living room location

The living room is not only the place where the family usually gather together, but it is also the area where the other people come into the house. This area is powerful because it can draw a lot of outside attention to the house. However, the energy carried by the outsiders would also enter your house, so you have to make sure that you are doing all you can to draw only on their positive spirits.

Building Living room according to Vastu

  • Seating: When sitting in the living room, the owner of the house has to face either the north or the east.
  • The northeast face: The east and the north face of the house are of high quality. They can attract good vibrations from this (north-east) corner. Having the living room in the northeast would make sure that people are more harmonious and there is less discord in the house.
  • Electrical appliances: House construction in Vastu considers the south to be the direction of fire, so this is the direction where all the electronics have to be kept. If you put your telephones, TVs, etc. in the southwest direction, it will definitely be beneficial for you.
  • Flooring: In Vastu for the living room, it is considered better for the living room to be at a lower level than the rest of the house since it can provide a good sense to the rest of the family, when compared to the guests, especially.
  • Doors: The doors in the living room are not restricted by numbers; they are restricted by the places where they can be kept. You can keep your door in the northern direction of your house, for this is the direction that has all the magnetic control. This is what will help people to be attracted to your house- a huge benefit for you!
5. Kitchenen location

The South-East corner of the house is the most ideal one for the kitchen’s location and cooking supposedly should be done while facing the East. However, please bear in mind that the kitchen should not be located directly in front of the main door of the house.

Building Kitchen according to Vastu

According to Vastu, the kitchen should be located in the South-Eastern part of the house.

a. The main kitchen platform should be in the East or South-East corner of the house.

b. The stove or gas burner should be placed in the South-East corner, a few inches away from the wall as it provides peace of mind.

c. An extension of the kitchen platform, in an ‘L’ shape, near the South wall for keeping electric appliances like a microwave oven, mixer, grinder etc. would be very auspicious.

d. The wash basin (sink) of the platform should be in the north-east corner as far as possible. The pitcher for the drinking water and related utensils should be in place in the North-East or the North side of the kitchen.

e. There should be one or two windows or air vents in the East and the West directions of the kitchen. An exhaust fan installed in this vent would be very useful.

f. The color of the floor and the walls of the kitchen may be yellow, orange, brown or red. However, as far as possible, the floors should not be black in color.

g. If a refrigerator is kept in the kitchen, it should be placed in the South-East, South, West or North directions. It should not be placed in the North-East direction. If it is in the South-West direction it should be a foot away from the corner, otherwise, it may need constant repairs.

6. Bedroom location

There are specific rules that you have to follow for maintaining the optimal situation of Vastu in the bedroom. The bedroom is a very intimate spot and this is the spot that needs a lot of attention when one is trying to improve its harmony with nature.

Building Bedroom according to Vastu

Door:

The door to the bedroom has to open at least up to ninety degrees. This is significant of the fact that you are allowing maximum opportunities into your life. You are also supposed to make sure that the bedroom door is made of a solid and strong material so that your private and intimate life is protected from the outer world and the interference as well.

Sleep pointing to the south:

When you sleep, your head should point to the south. The north provides the body with magnetic energy, which will excite the blood.

Mirrors:

Do not keep a mirror on the northern side of the bedroom. This will make sure that you are always thinking about the troubles and it will also make sure that your troubles are being projected back at you. Move the mirror to another wall or you just keep the mirror covered when you are sleeping in the night.

Sharp corners:

IN the bedroom, Vastu dictates that you avoid sleeping directly in line with any sharp corners. Sharp corners would take away the calm and serenity from your life and make you much more tensed. This will not make the intimacy situation any better. Neither will it improve your chances of becoming successful.

To improve on the interior, follow the above vastu tips which bring in more peace, calmness, wealth, prosperity to your life.
